An excellent drum set method for student drum set players going out into the "real world". I like Jim Riley's straight forward approach. These time patterns and fills simply WORK for each particular style. Not a lot of detail or endless variations. I have several method books that have dozens of variations for the multitude of Latin music styles. These grooves will save your ass and get you started in the right direction until you get more experience with the style. The 2 included CDs are excellent. One has a recording of the drum part and the other has play-a-long tracks. The play-a-long tracks are excellent and the best part. I use these tracks to practice the material in this book and even material in other books. I stumbled upon this book and have used it a great deal since. Highly recommend as a practical method book that will yield immediate results.

Really good basic information on key beats and grooves for multiple genres of music, and the recorded play-along tracks were produced with live professional musicians. Very good book for any drummer looking to play different styles. For example, I was never much into country music, but I have regular opportunities to sub in a local country band. Most of the drummers who play with that band are not really country drummers, either, and they play more like rock drummers. This book shows you basic country beats that can be used on most any country song, and Jim Riley certainly knows what he's talking about, as the drummer for country superstars Rascal Flatts. The great thing about the book, though, is that it presents many styles, not just country. You can learn some basic blues, rock, pop, reggae and even Latin beats. It's a great resource for anyone who wants to be a better working drummer.

I was interested in this book because I had attended a Modern Drummer Fest Master Class with Jim and was blown away by his abilities for playing and enthusiasm to teach. I had also seen some of the demo vids that Jim put out on the drumless tracks and thought the music was authentic to the style and wanted to play along to see how well I could play them too. In particular, I now play a lot of country music, because of where I live, and always felt that I had some QC problems with some of my Country Chops. Checking out the suggested patterns and recording myself playing to the tracks really was a totally downer but it gave me a reference point on how I needed to adjust my groove to fit the music better. The variety of styles covered in the book is comprehensive so you won't be bored anytime soon. This is a true bargain at 17 bucks for all the tracks you get and the ink used to print all those pages. I have some other Bible books, which are solid, but I have found this one is the most useful in improving my playing. Giddy on up and click the Add To Cart Button!

Simple.If you work through this book, you can confidently go out and gig/record and be assured that you are prepared for whatever comes your way. The book won't make you a true expert in rock, country, blues, pop, swing, metal, etc., but, it will make you proficient enough to go out and actually work.The fatal flaw of many drumming books is that they contain endless variations on a theme. For example, in Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer, there are numerous exercises that help your coordination and independence, but are not applicable in the "real world." Survival Guide for the Modern Drummer only gives you exercises that you can actually use.The book also gives you a clear “blueprint” for the things every working drummer needs to know. The most common fills, ghost notes, funk beats, the half time shuffle, the country train beat, basic swing four bar breaks, heavy metal double bass patterns, blues beats – it’s all here in a concise, user friendly format. The two pages on ghost notes alone are worth the price of the book.This book comes with audio examples and play along tracks for each exercise. With the downloadable software, you can also slow down and speed up the exercises for practice. But, that is just the beginning. There are also numerous YouTube videos with instruction and performance. Also, the book includes charts of the play along tracks using the Nashville Numbering System described in Jim Riley's first book. There is also a Facebook page for the book, where other students trade ideas, videos and tips. Sometimes the author responds too!I recently attended a three-day drum clinic with Jim Riley. He connects well with his students. He is a gifted instructor with a degree in music education. Foremost, he is a working drummer.The exercises and tracks in this book are very similar to real songs. We would play and exercise, and he would say, “Who recognizes that one?” The examples in the book teach the set list that every working drummer needs to know.Only a top country drummer could write this book. Like country music itself, this book is for the workingman. In this case, a working drummer.

Great book written by a great guy. Play alongs are awesome, No note for note transcriptions, just song structure and suggested grooves and fills. Feels like your playing with live musicians in the studio. Percussion tracks substitute for annoying clicks and the included groove CD has everything you need to learn styles that you may not be comfortable or familiar with. Play Alongs alone are well worth the price of admission!!

This book is more of a basic or beginner theology text. I felt like I only learned a couple of new bits of information. It is well written however and maybe perfect as an introductory read to the significance of the events that took place in the upper room and how it can be relevant personally.

Very thoughtful and thought-provoking look at the key moments for founding the early church. I read it during Holy Week (fortuitous timing, given the subject) and found it a wonderful starting point for mediation on how the events in the upper room inform God's personal call to me to go out and live my faith. This will be a great one to go back to again and again.

This book brought me back to an early memory of myself as a young child on vacation at Mass, daydreaming of the beach most likely, and upon hearing the words Apostolic church in the creed, told my Mom we were in the wrong church! Obviously, I was too young to know the meaning of apostolic, but to read Monsignor Vaghi's book is to fully understand and appreciate the apostolic underpinnings of the Catholic Church. This book is an exciting account of the events which took place in the upper room. The recent change in the Mass's pre-communion prayer, "worthy of your entering under my roof", now makes more sense to me.

People laugh at how I describe my connection with my gardens. This is the first time I found someone describe it the same way I do. I have always allowed the garden to guide me in how to tend to it; where to place paths; where to plant a particular plant. I often am told that my hobby is gardening - I do not understand their comment. My connection to my land and me tending to it is no different than I drinking water to exits. Many neighbors walk by my property and dislike that I have replaced the lawn with California Natives which go dormant during the summer. While their front yards are green with grass, my yard dies back and sleeps for 3 months. While my garden is green and has blooms, the frost has browned their lawn. "The Garden Awakening" endorses my perception and has given me the courage to keep educating people in the wonders of native plants.

Enchanting. I may only have a small space but I have completely changed my stewardship of the soil. Can't wait for Spring to put my plans into action. If you have an ounce of Celtic blood in you, you will be charmed by Mary. I usually share my books since It's wasteful to leave then sitting on the shelf. This one may be borrowed but it will definitely need to be brought back to me. It's a keeper.

I would love a box of these books to hand out freely to my friends and garden lovers. Mary nails it with our responsibilities to the spirit of the land and to think outside of the box. This is a book that is a changemaker for future Gardens and home environments… Thank you Mary Reynolds for writing this marvelous book… I keep referring to it time and time again, and I'm a seasoned old Landscape Architect!!

Not your mama's gardening book. Infused with Celtic mysticism and pagan magic, Mary Reynold gives us a relational way to approach the garden. "What nature needs is not more gardeners but guardians." Nature is alive at every level , conscious and able to communicate with the responsive gardener/guardian. But not only does she believe this, she shows us how to begin a redemptive, healing relationship with nature through intentional rituals and practices. She goes on to show some creative spiritually conceived garden designs for gardens of all sizes which to me are very inspiring. The second half of the book is about gardening in a way that heals land that has been abused and poisoned with chemicals and bad practices. Permaculture is presented in detail with suggestions for plants and processes to restore the land. All is good but the first half of the book is well worth the price of purchase. It seems clear to this writer that we are fast destroying the planet we live on. A new world view that is in fact thousands of years old, may be just what is needed to begin the restoration of the wounded planet and Mary Reynolds is a wonderful evangelist for this new/oldest religion. At the end of a visit with an old Irish traditional farmer, Mary asked him his view of God. She said this man of deep thoughts and few words held up a flower and said simply, "this is God." Amen!

This is a visually stunning book, well written and illustrated, and chock full of inspiration. Ms. Reynolds is a tour de force in landscape design communities. Her name is mentioned with reverence here in Maine, where I live. She has single-handedly changed the way gardeners see their spaces, and the way landscapes are designed. If you are looking for a way to re-wild your landscape, or a chance to be happier, healthier, and more creative, which science has already proven that getting closer to nature does, you will love Gardening Awakening. This book was, for me, an antidote for these times.

I rarely buy new books. Instead, I purchase them used or borrow them from the library. Anyway, I came across a discussion of Mary Reynold’s book (which sold out months ago in the UK before it arrived in the US) on a garden blog and was intrigued. An edible wild forest garden in the backyard? Was that even possible?Mary Reynolds is extremely creative and has strong opinions (is passionate) about what is right and wrong in our landscape. I agree with most of her opinions, which is probably why the book appealed to me in the first place.Reynolds gives us one solution to fix our yard’s monoculture that no longer supports anything but the chemical companies (pesticides and herbicides) and the combustible engine. While this is not the first time most of us have heard mankind is wiping out “the wild” and replacing it with buildings and lawns, I think Mary Reynolds’ book brings an imaginative solution to fix this problem.Cons? I live in Texas and Ms. Reynolds lives in Ireland, which are two extremely different cultures. Ms. Reynolds’ blessing of the land and a few other practices might not go over well with some Texans and while I think the book’s basic concepts are translatable to any landscape, one has to be as imaginative as Ms. Reynolds to find a comparable solution to landscaping a home in south or west Texas as it would be difficult (even out of place) to create a forest there. Still, if you adhere to Ms. Reynold’s premise of listening to what the land wants, then your west or south Texas yard would consist of scrub brush and/or cacti, which for some folks, is just fine.Overall, I think this is a book worth having.
