Well, I actually liked this book more than I expected to. I ordered it the day after it was released and started reading it upon its arrival, but put it down maybe 1/3 of the way through. It was probably just my mood though, because the second try did the trick and I ended up reading it cover to cover in only a couple of days. Although it's officially Book 2 in the "Rokesby" family series, it can easily be read as a standalone. And frankly, I have no idea why the cover states this as being "A Bridgerton Prequel" since it's really not. While the first book in this series was about Billie Bridgeton (the original Bridgerton siblings aunt) and she is mentioned in this story, Billie makes just a brief appearance at the very end and this book otherwise has nothing at all to do with the Bridgertons.THE GIRL WITH THE MAKE-BELIEVE HUSBAND actually had a decent and clever plot, unlike its predecessor "Because of Miss Bridgerton" which truthfully didn't seem to have one. It's the story of a young woman who lies about being married to her brother's best friend, only to be caught up in a web of lies and deceit that spins out of her control... Although it took me a little while to get involved in this story, I ended up really enjoying it. Ms. Quinn's typical wit and charm were definitely on display, but it wasn't quite as funny as I've come to expect of her work. Instead it was often serious and sad at times, which had me near tears on a few occasions. And while it was surely an emotional tale, it's also very sweet, tender, and romantic too. There are even a couple of passionate love scenes that were written with depth and feeling.Cecilia and Edward were both kind and endearing characters, though neither were as vivid or outgoing as I'd have liked. This story does take place during wartime however, so perhaps those traits would have been inappropriate under the circumstances. The setting did serve as a reminder of the high price those in the military and their loved ones pay each and every day. On a whole though, I just thought it was a lovely romance that was both compelling and engaging. There was even one part in particular that I didn't see coming, though maybe I was being obtuse and should have. And while I have to admit to finding the end predictable, it still made my heart happy so I didn't really care. Overall it was just a pleasant way to spend a few hours and I'm very glad to have read it =)

I've been a Quinn fan for years, and really hoped for more from this book. The premise was very promising--a woman traveling to Revolutionary War America to find her lost brother. But that premise is wasted on two characters who spend most of the book in either a hospital or a hotel room. The female character had enough spine to cross the entire Atlantic heading into a warzone...but that's where her courage runs out, a fact even she laments. There were a lot of aspects Quinn could have explored (and would have in the early Bridgerton books)--the realities of head trauma just for starters, and preferably more of the actual history of the American Revolution from the British perspective. Meeting real historical figures would have been nice, describing the countryside, some REAL CONFLICT as the two characters do...something. Anything. Instead, the historical side of this book is a loosely painted framework around a regrettably overdone amnesia/misunderstanding plot that hinges on characters lying and not communicating instead of any external force (and can I say just how OVER "'romances' where two character lie to each other the entire book, and still live happily ever after" I am?). And the head trauma is just as lightly explored as a temporary nuisance instead of bringing the serious life changes many do.As always, the sex scenes are very well written. So if you're more interested in erotica than romance or plot, this is probably the book for you.

This book is terrible. I normally love JQ, but I have told my friends who are JQ fans to skip it. I've read all her other books, and this is absolutely her weakest. I got about 30% in and had to put it down. The story is boring, the characters are thin. This is not what I expect from JQ or this genre. it took me about a week or so before I picked it up again to get through it. I was convinced it would get better. Disappointingly, it did not. Had I not known this was a JQ novel, I would never think it was written by her.

This book was a barely ok read. I've read all her books, line th Bridgerton's, but this book and the previous one just don't have the spark. I have no problem putting them down. Not sure if I will buy the next one or just borrow it. I'm finding this trend with other authors, too. And have several used to be favorite authors, that just don't do it for me anymore.
